             Tales and legends for children

 

The book "The Mayas" of Guillermo Murray talk about tales and legends of a scenic land call Yucatan. Consist in a series of wonderful stories, some of which will relate below:

 

First part: Tales and legends of the Mayan cities

 

·         The mystery of Chichen Itza: the story of the white flower

 

This legend talk about a pretty princess called Sac-Nite that life in lanc scene call Mayapan. When she was fifteen years old, her father, the king Hunacel promissed her hand to soveraign of Uxmal, the prince Ulil, the same day she meeted to the prince of Chichen Itza the prince Canek and she fell in love immediatly but they were not stayed together because she was engaged whit the prince Ulil. When arrive the date of the wedding and they were sads. She waiting silent but some seconds before the prince Canek arrive and rescued at the princess them get into in the jungle whit all town of Chichen Itza and was never heard from them. 

 

·         Uxmal was made in one night: the legend of the dwaft

 

This tale relate the story of a the son of a witch born from an egg all who knew him as the dwarf. Some day the dwarf found a musical triangle made of gold and wanted play it immediatly. The triangle emmited a sharp sound. But he did not know it was an old prophecy that said that one who played the musical triangle was king and would raise a beautiful city that would take the name of "La Resplandeciente". The king was really annoyed whit the idea of loosing his kingdomand orderer to find who had played the musical triangle with the intention to kill him, so he did go through a series of very difficult tests but the dwarf passed all stages and built all in one night its beautiful castle, after the king had to pay for everything bad that had passed and became the new king of the city of Uxmal that call " La Resplandeciete" 

 

·         The great congress of Copan

 

This story tells how many years the wise men and astronomers were invited to a great congress in the city of Copan in which the  wise men published their ideas. One of them was Kuk, an astronomer from Yaachilan, his daughter Nite-ha and his son Keel. Although the Mayas were a cultured town, the  women wasn't  studied astronomy. Kuk had brilliant ideas but before the congress, decided to go to a strange temple and trust his writings to his daughter but there was an evil astronomer who wanted to beat Kuk and his name was pacal, so when Kuk went at night to the  temple was kidnapped by pacal so that Kuk not come to Congress. step one day and Kuk not appeared and the wise just heard the idea of Pascal and the time of the sages approached vote, but his daughter  loved more his father and  decided to share their ideas with the risk that was punished terribly but astronomers who were friends of his father gave him the word and all were amazed with their ideas.

 

·         The tunnel under the sea: the last days of Tulum

 

This is the story of tulum, the last Mayan frontier. Tell the granparent's that the Mayab empire was facing difficult times and they finally could not resist. In the Mayab there were wars and conflicts everytime beetwen all cities, all wanted the power and was betrayed each. The king of Zama , Tutul Xiu, built  beautiful places and plazas but  the white men arrived and were  getting closer and closer then the king ordered build a wall and the name of the city changed to Tulum that meaning wall. TheTulum town was defended far as he could, but arrived the day and the people must that escaped and the few people who followed their king left and disappeared through a tunnel to the sea shore, vowing that they would return.

 

Nobody really knows what happened with the deserted cities of mayab, but these are some stories that tell the inhabitants of this region.

 

second part

Tales and legends of animals from the Mayab

 

The legend of the maquech.

 

This legens as how the beetles became pets for the people of the sacred city of Yahilan. In this beautiful city was life a beauty princess called Cuzan, her father was the king Anhú, some day her father arranged the marriage  whit the prince of Palenque, but she was meet to Chapol and he wasn't the elect for Cuzan. Her father of Cuzan was entered of this and he was very angry so decied punishment to Chalpol but the princess  implored her father to forgive life Chalpol and them the sorcers turned into to Chalpol  a beetle as punishment for the audacity he had committed, Cuzan take it in their hands and swear never again be separated from he.and command  adorn it with gemstones and that's how the beetles became pets.

 

Why the vultures are black.

 

This legend talk about how the chom became vultures. The legend says that the King of Uxmal   gave a big feast to honor his God: Unab ku. the king commanded  make many delicious dishes.It was a fresh, sunny and good day so the king decided that the banquet was going to be served on the terrace of his palace.While the king went to his chamber to put on his best clothes the choms (some multicolored and beautiful birds)  landed on the terrace and ate all the food like naughty children and made an awful mess. When the king came to terrace he was furious and he ordered his soldiers to kill birds, but the chom flew very high and neigher the arrows nor blowguns could reach them. Then the king commanded  his priest and wizards to found the best way to punish the chom for their mischief. Then the wise men took the feathers of the chomps that fall down from the sky and thereby created a black soup with a magic water so set a trap. Returned to prepare the banquet and when the choms returned to land on. for to eat everything thrown at them dark water. Them bewitched  telling them for profaning the food of the gods never again eat delicious dishes and taking away its elegant crest and its beautiful plumage.

 

How quetzals turned green

 

This legend says that long ago there was a birds with brown and short plumage.These birds couldn't fly so they ate cougars and boars. They are tired of being eaten begged the gods that turn into in green color to blend  with the plants. But the gods responded that they themselves had to find a solution. Then they began to think they could do and the first thing that came up was standing under a large tree, but they did not work. When it came time for the food they tested some berries that had never eaten and liked them so much that they began to dye their red feathers. they realized that the gods had sent them a sign. Then went through a tree and ate many tepeaguacate their feathers were painted green and also grew them until they could fly. these birds were very happy and grateful to the gods.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The skin of the deer

The story developed in the Mabab “The land of the pheasant and deer”.

The deer’s skin was painted whit a very pale color and it could be seen from everywhere.

When the father, the god Itzamna created the earth of the Mayas decided to give life to three animals to live there, The pheasant, the deer and the rattlesnake.

The humans respected the deers and they only hunted them for necessity, their skin remainted that like.

There was a time were  the people started  to hunt them for the pleasure or hurting them.

The legend says that some day a Little deer wich had lost its mother because of a hunter was persecuted. It was lost but the Little animal pleaded at the lord Itzmna that  save him. Then a miracle happened: he fell into a cave in the middle of hid desesperate run and his leg.

However this was a place where three great geniuses of the earth they saw the situation of small deer and decided to help take care of him after he was granted a wish which was that the deer would be safe from hunters and then suddenly took refuge Genie you threw dust while you were asking the creator to change his skin and that's how the skin of the deer's how we know it.

The humming bird’s wedding

This legend talk about the humming bird. 

This story tells how a small hummingbird was crying because she could not finish building their nest and so to marry.

A macaw that was passing by there Heard how the humming bird lamented and the macaw decided to help.

They started calling all the jungle animals to help make the wedding.

  • The cenote gave the mirror

  • The iguana gave the comb

  • The deer gave the shoes

  • The spider made the dress

  • The bird xomxanil gave the necklance

And so wedding hummingbird lady did and since then never again was heard the cry of the hummingbirds.

The woodpeker and our father, the corn

This legend says as the god Itzamná gave them a gift corn to the Mayan people.

Itzamná God told his people that in the only great mountain would find the solution to their problems of scarcity by the plight.

The people were disappointed as it was very complicated the job but they had an idea and decided to get help from the rain god, Chac great.

The God Chaac  threw a rain of arrows and much thunder but it was very difficult to break the rock of the mountain so he decided to ask for helps the woodpecker to report that was the weakest part of the mountain and so to break.

When the woodpecker found the easiest part to break, the God Chaac sent him a lightning and so the mountain was broken. inside the mountain was the corn, then the people was became very happy . when the woodpecker was on the mountain rock fall on his head and blood gushed a thread for it is said that  has a part red on  head.

Fourth part + fifth and last part

Explorers of the Mayab

 

This stoy talk about two important characters called John Lloyd Stephens, and his friend Federico Catherwood. They were artists and after receiving news that there was a beautiful city called copan decided in to search it.in the year of 1839 embarked to Belize and Honduras looking for city of copan, and while many difficulties entontraron arose the lost city. o began creating beautiful paintings of the cities and were visiting all the places where there were civilizations so ultimately create a so-called work Yucatan travel.

 

Gonzalo Guerrero

 This is the story of one man who felt in love of the Mayab so much that he gave his life to defend it. When he lived in Spain he dreamed with wealth and glory. but he was on a boat that naufrago and until 1511 was when I play ground on the coasts of Quintana roo only the and another survivor. at the beginning they were treated as slaves, but with the passage of time were adapted to form part of the society. Gonzalo married and had children. When the Spaniards arrived to. conquer the decided to fight next to those who considered his brothers, the Mayans. He died defending his people and his family. and it was known as the Warrior of the South. 

 

One Day in the life a Mayan child

in this last story narrates as a Mayan child's life, but it is a holiday, says all the traditions that are carried out at a Christening. It is said that Maya children are born cold so when they are born they put 2 peppers to warm them. also tells how his grandparents told him stories. And it describes how the House is of a Mayan. Also talks about the food. And that smell of fresh forest nights. He also mentions that there is a warm climate. I.e. speaks about the important features of the city andtheir traditions.
